#NWWV001
Format: DVD
Runtime: 54 minutes

By: NewWoodworker.com LLC

As with all of the material on NewWoodworker.com, The Basic Bowl was produced in a no-nonsense fashion. There is no filler material or endless repetitive cuts to use up time and footage. The video is high-quality but has been edited down to present the maximum amount of information in a fast-paced, informative format.

Most important throughout the production of this DVD was to create an educational video that came as close as possible to having you actually visit the NewWoodworker.com shop. One woodworker talking to another without the fluff.

Tool & Lathe Basics

In this segment of the video, we present an overview of the chisels and lathe. The idea of this video segment is to familiarize you with the basic parts and uses, plus pass along some tips that I have found useful in the NewWoodworker.com shop.

We look at the primary types of turning tools, how they are applied to the wood and how the tool rest is adjusted for them. We also look at the basic features of a lathe and provide tips to keep your lathe running trouble free and you safe.

Preparing the Stock

Getting stock ready for turning is important and in this segment, we look at ways to make the transition from square (or natural) stock to mounting it on the lathe and rounding it out. This may seem like a simple part of the turning process but we have received hundreds of emails from beginning turners who have encountered difficulties, surprises and even a few injuries. This segment was designed around those questions and is intended to get you started safely.

Chucks & Faceplates

Two of the most popular lathe accessories, this segment looks at the basics of installing, removing and using chucks and faceplates. Like the Preparing Stock segment, Chucks & Faceplates was inspired in part by the problems we hear about most frequently.

We look at the basic features of chucks and faceplates as well as how stock is prepared for mounting on them. Securing the stock properly for the initial rounding is important as this is one of the most stressful parts of turning for the stock and lathe.

Turn A Bowl

Beginning with 4" by 8" bowl blank, one of the most popular sizes, this segment - the largest on the DVD – the process of turning a basic bowl is shown from rounding to finishing. This is a simple but classic bowl shape that is great for practice but helps refine the skills needed to turn whatever shape or design your mind can come up with.

In addition to showing the process of turning a bowl, problem points within that procedure are identified and tool presentation and uses are suggested to help get you through them. The tools used are identified and their use shown throughout the process.

In addition to rounding, shaping and hollowing, using Jumbo Jaws (Cole Jaws) is shown because we get so many emails on this point.

Best of all, The Basic Bowl DVD costs only $12.00, which includes FREE shipping via 1st Class USPS throughout the United States!
